The City of Chania

Day 5 - Friday, July 13th 2012

Friday the 13rh turned out to be an exciting, fun day and a great night out in Chania.  Having spent a very enjoyable day at the resort, we set out to discover Chania by night.  As we really don't enjoy clubbing and noisy bars, we decided to go for a walk  along Halidon Street in the old city, then turning on the left we got to Skoufon Street which used to be the old Jewish Quarter. In this  picturesque, narrow alley you will find the Synagogue Cafe-Bar and the Greek tavern Semiramis. We decided to stop there and have a traditional Cretan dinner.  There was live Greek music, mostly oldies, which we loved very much, especially because no microphones were used and so we could enjoy  dinner, chat to each other and listen to the music. Say that the food was delicious would be an undarstatement. It was simply divine. We tried the famous Cretan kalitsounia - small crispy pastries stuffed with spinach and cretan cheeses -  cretan zuccini rolls,  cretan meatballs, chicken souvlaki, a traditional Greek salad, meltzanosalata - aubergine salad - and taramosalata (smoked cod's roe salad), a carafe of local red wine and a big bottle of mineral water.  Hot toasted bread with olive-oil came along. We paid € 43 ($52)   Water melon and crispy loukoumades - a kind of  deep fried dough soaked in honey and cinnamon - were on the house.  After dinner, we had coffee and raki

Day 6 - Saturday, July  14 2012

Sightseeing in Chania

Despite the terrible heat wave ,  40*C + (106 F),  we went sightseeing in Chania and truly enjoyed it! What I loved most in Chania is the way old buildings dating back to the 11th century stand next to modern constructions. This is the real charm of Chania, I guess. We visited the Byzantine Wall, the naturally fortified  hill of Castelli - named castel vecchio by the Venetian conquerors - the village of Nerokourou, the settlement of Suda, the Monastery of Chrysopighi and , of course, the Archaeological Museum of Chania.  We  finally went back to the old port, had an ouzomeze at Remezzo and then fresh barbouni ( red mullet) at Petrides Fish Tavern!

Day 6 -  Sunday, July 15 2012
A quiet and relaxing day at Avra Imperial Beach Resort and Spa. Last 2 days to enjoy our private swimming-pool! I swam a lot today for more than 45 min non-stop.  Then more reading - I went back to reading Eliot again. Am I obsessed? Four Quartets,Ash Wednesday and my favourite: The Love Song of  J. Alfred Prufrock. It was hot and humid in the evening but we certainly did not miss dinner which is , I must admit, a unique experience at Avra Imperial Beach Resort and Spa.
Day 7 -  Monday, July 16 2012.
All good things eventually come to an end and so did our memorable holiday in Chania, Crete.  We spent the last day of our holiday at the resort . At 5:30 pm, the taxi was there and in about 2 hours, we were checking in at Nikos Kazantzakis Airport in Heraklion.  Cyprus Airways left on time - at 9:15 pm - and safely flew us back home.
